A place for reconnection and education

Welcome to the Melungeon Peoples Project! Melungeon Peoples Project was founded after recognizing how displacement and disconnection continues to affect Melungeon communities and cultural identity. Our goal is to preserve and share things we know and have learned like language, traditions, and everyday life ways. This isn’t a professional website, nor is it organized, but it is honest and authentic. This place is more like a scrapbook of the people, places, and culture that we come from. I invite those of you interested in what we have to share to explore the archives, use the navigation to learn more, and join in honoring our history while building connections for the future. As a disclaimer, the information stored here primarily pertains to the Coal Camp Melungeon families of East Kentucky, East Tennessee, and West Virginia. When we find something we want to write about, document, preserve, or remember, we put it here. Take it or leave it, that’s none of our concern.
